The requirement can also be met by participation in any ESJ interscholastic sport for three seasons, dance classes for three years, or dance ensemble for three years.
The physical education requirement must be fulfilled at the end of junior year. If it is not, students will be placed in an Upper School PE class as a senior.

Prerequisite: Student-athletes should be a Junior Varsity or Varsity athlete, in good standing on one or more 2025-2026 sports teams, or be recommended for the course by an Episcopal Junior Varsity or Varsity coach.
Description: This course is designed for student-athletes to augment sport-specific skill development, whether in-season or off-season. Student-athletes participate in weight training, circuit work, and sport-specific activities to enhance their overall mental and physical development. Students follow a training program that adapts to in-season and off-season needs: in-season focuses on workout recovery, strength maintenance, and mobility therapy, while out-of-season needs focus on workout intensity, strength building, and goal setting.
PEUS41 Theory and Practice in Coaching (.5 credit), Semester 1

Description: This course prepares students for athletic coaching by helping them develop a personal coaching philosophy, learning essential strategies and techniques to make them a successful coach. Students design and implement practice plans, using principles of training and motivation techniques, while refining communication skills to effectively interact with players, parents, administration, and the press. Ideal for those aspiring to coach at any level, this course equips students with the tools to lead and inspire teams both on and off the field.
PEUS42 Sports Management (.5 credit), Semester 2

Description: Sports Management is a hands-on, project-based course that introduces students to the dynamic field of sports management. Throughout the course, students explore essential topics such as marketing, budgeting, sports law, facility ownership and management, as well as effective leadership and communication techniques. Students gain practical experience by designing marketing campaigns and promoting an athletic event in the spring. This course is ideal for those interested in pursuing careers in the sports and business industries. Lastly, the course equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in leadership roles both on and off the field.
PEUS6 Team Sports and Fitness (.5 credit)
Level: 10th through 12th grades
Length: Semester / Course can be taken more than once.
Description: This course builds skills, confidence, and teamwork through a variety of competitive and cooperative traditional and non-traditional sports. Students will develop fundamental techniques, learn game strategies, and improve overall fitness with strength, agility, and cardio training. Emphasis is placed on communication, sportsmanship, and staying active in ways that support lifelong health. All skill levels are welcome, and students will rotate through multiple team-based and lifestyle activities throughout the semester.
