More than 90 World Languages students were recognized with 105 awards in a special ceremony Tuesday, receiving certificates for induction into a language National Honor Society for Spanish, French, Chinese, American Sign Language, and Latin, as well as the Global Seal of Biliteracy awards. For acceptance into the Honor Society, students must have reached Level 3 and have completed other requirements specific to their respective language. To achieve a Global Seal of Biliteracy, students must take four different language acquisition exams assessing reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension.
Upper School students may attain the following: Functional Fluency, which recognizes learners at the intermediate-mid proficiency level on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) scale; or Working Fluency, which acknowledges learning at the advanced-low proficiency level on the ACTFL scale.
“We are proud of each student’s efforts and success with their language studies, their growth as people, and their increasing appreciation for other cultures and perspectives in our increasingly interconnected world. This honor, along with international travel and continued language study, will serve these students very well and set them apart,” said Dr. David Schwei, World Languages Department Chair.
