Third Grade Explores Northeast Florida Through Wildlife Art

Throughout the school year, third grade students have been studying the history, geography, and political science of Jacksonville through a variety of lessons, field trips, and hands-on assignments. As an extension of their curriculum, they also explored local wildlife in art, focusing on the birds of Northeast Florida. Students began their projects using colored pencils to create detailed drawings, then added depth with watercolor paint to complete their original works. Along the way, they learned about the French-American artist and naturalist John James Audubon, who created a complete pictorial record of birds in North America. Inspired by Audubon’s work, students chose native species such as ospreys, hawks, seagulls, ducks, cranes, herons, cardinals, blue jays, and pelicans to depict in their artwork, bringing their studies of Northeast Florida to life through creativity and observation.
