Students Win at International Science and Engineering Fair

James Steffes ’26 and Alex Chindris ’25 were Third Place Award winners in the Robotics Category at the recent International Science and Engineering Fair, in Columbus, Ohio, where 1,500 students from 75 countries competed for $9 million in awards and scholarships. James and Alex designed, constructed, and tested a scalable autonomous multi-UAV system that utilized onboard computer techniques for wide-area object identification. After 10 months of intense work with quadcopter drones, visual and thermal cameras, and computer systems, their prototype had a 96% detection rate of objects on the ground. Their third place award was accompanied by a check for $1,200. Caden Lipari ’27 was also a finalist at the fair, where he presented his project on the heat adaptation of coral. This year, 20 sophomores, juniors, and seniors conducted scientific investigations on a variety of topics, ranging from fluoridation and alternative fuels to seizure treatments and mangroves. The knowledge and skills gained in every class laid the foundation for their scientific success.
