St. Mark’s Community Unseals 25-Year-Old Time Capsule

On May 13, past and present members of the St. Mark’s community gathered to open a time capsule buried 25 years earlier. The event served as a bridge between generations, offering a glimpse into the life and culture of the school a quarter-century ago. View photos.

Third grade instructor Drew Haramis and former parent and current grandparent, Mary Lee Willetts, both of whom were involved in the original burial of the capsule, shared reflections. Vincent Pulignano ‘09, a student at St. Mark’s in 2000 and now a current parent, also offered remarks alongside Beville Anderson, Head of Lower School, St. Mark’s Campus.

Many former students, teachers, and parents were in attendance, joined by current students, faculty, and staff. The gathering marked a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the school’s history.

Inside the capsule were a variety of items that captured everyday life and school memories from 25 years ago—old class photos, handwritten letters, a disposable camera, Ortega River Run and school uniform shirts, grocery receipts, and thoughtful questions about the future, such as whether pennies would still be in use. The event reminded attendants how much has changed – and how much remains the same.
