Davis Award for Excellence in Teaching
Cristi Skeels ’91 (Upper School) and Shannon Nunley (Middle School)
Established in 1992, the Davis Awards recognize teachers who exemplify quality instruction and meaningful influence on student learning. Recipients are selected for consistently going above and beyond in their dedication to students, demonstrating the rare ability to motivate learners to ever-higher levels of achievement, and committing to ongoing professional growth. The award is intended to inspire all Episcopal faculty to pursue uncompromising excellence and genuine care in the classroom.
Shannon Nunley brings infectious energy and deep subject knowledge to every lesson, meeting sixth grade students where they are — regardless of learning style, background, or ability level — while holding each one to the highest standards. Colleagues describe her as someone who treats every student like family. Her warmth extends beyond the classroom: she volunteers for the hospitality committee as well, an extension of her ability to make everyone feel welcome. One nominator put it simply: “Working alongside her is a privilege. I would not be the teacher, person, or advisor I am today without her advice and patience.” Mrs. Nunley’s two daughters, Addison ‘23 and Alyssa ‘25, are alumni.
Cristi Peterson Skeels ’91 is described by colleagues as a mentor, role model, and encourager who consistently demonstrates what it means to educate the whole student while never losing sight of who they are as individuals. Her classroom is a dynamic environment where students feel challenged, supported, and inspired — driven by her genuine enthusiasm for her subject and her unshakable belief in every student’s capacity to grow. She volunteers wherever she sees a need, including Honor and Discipline Council processes, because she understands that education is as much about character as curriculum. Mrs. Skeels is a graduate of the Episcopal Class of 1991 and the daughter of a longtime Episcopal teacher, Art Peterson. Her son Clancy ‘25 is an alumnus and her daughter, Ellie, is a member of the Class of 2027. Mrs. Skeel’s teaches Spanish and is the Head Girls Rowing Coach.
The Davis Award for Excellence in Teaching requires recipients to have served on the Episcopal faculty for a minimum of three years and to be returning the following year.
