Fourth Grade Students Bring Literary Settings to Life with AI and VR

St. Mark’s Campus fourth grade students recently experienced the world of Louis Sachar’s novel Holes in an entirely new dimension. In a collaborative project led by teachers Morgan Lankford and Beth Harralson with David Sandlin, Technology and Innovation Instructor, students harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to enhance their creative writing and literary comprehension. Students worked with Sparky, an AI teaching assistant, to craft vivid, detailed descriptions of locations from the novel. From the harsh landscape of Camp Green Lake to the vibrant town of Green Lake from the past, Sparky provided real-time feedback and guidance to help students refine their descriptive language and add sensory details. Students then used AI image generation to transform their words into visual representations, seeing their unique interpretations of the story’s settings come to life. The project culminated with students exploring their AI-generated settings in immersive virtual reality using ClassVR headsets, allowing them to step inside the worlds they had imagined and described.
