New This Week
Please make plans to attend our Upper School Open House on Thursday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m. Open House, a parent-only event, provides an opportunity for parents to meet your child’s current teachers and walk through your child’s schedule.
Prior to arrival, please access your student’s schedule in the Parent Portal of My ESJ and print as needed. The Open House schedule and a campus map may be viewed here. Please note that due to recent renovations, we renumbered most classroom spaces this summer, and many locations have new numbers. Paper copies of schedules and maps will not be available.
We ask you to wear your parent nametag to help us welcome you. Check-in is not required. If you need assistance upon arrival, please go to the Bryan Library. Advisory will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. and the evening will conclude at 7:30 p.m.
While time will not allow for discussion about individual students, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Friday, October 3, when you will have the opportunity to meet with teachers individually. Additional information regarding Parent-Teacher Conferences will be available in the Insider at a later date. If you feel there are issues or needs you wish to discuss prior to conferences, please reach out to your child’s advisor.

Dear Parents and Students,
One of the important annual events on the school calendar is the Holy Eucharist at St. John’s Cathedral. Episcopal School of Jacksonville began in 1966 as a result of the vision and persistence of the Dean, Vestry, and people of the Cathedral. We celebrate our historic link with the Cathedral in Eucharistic worship because that is where the mission and ministry of our school were born.
This year, students in 7th, 9th, and 12th grades will go to St. John’s Cathedral to participate in the Holy Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10. These students will worship at the Cathedral, where our great school was founded. They will meet the Cathedral clergy, worship in this sacred space, and hear the beautiful organ music.
Students in 6th, 8th, 10th and 11th grades will stay on campus on Wednesday, September 10. They will also participate in the Holy Eucharist. They will gather in the Deming Theatre after their first class. After the Holy Eucharist they will go to advisory where they will engage in Health Safety and Wellbeing activities.
On September 10, ALL students will attend their first class of the day (3rd period) from 8:05 a.m. – 9:10 a.m. At 9:10 a.m., students will go to Advisory.
Chapel Dress is required of ALL students on this day.
- Students in grades 7,9, and 12 will get on the bus with their advisor and will stay with their Advisory through the program at the Cathedral which will include the Holy Eucharist.
- Seniors will not be permitted to drive themselves to the Cathedral. All students must ride the bus to the Cathedral.
- After the service, students will return to campus to attend their 4th period class.
- Students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 11 will stay on campus for Chapel/Holy Eucharist all together followed by Health Safety and Wellbeing activities based in their advisory.
Following these special events, all students will continue with their regular schedule including 4th period, Activities/Lunch periods and then the final two class periods of the day (periods 5 and 6).
Student attendance is required at school and at St. John’s Cathedral. Parents are always welcome to attend Chapel services at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, the Cathedral, and all other school Chapel services.

Financial Aid Workshop Series Begins September 30
For this academic year, Episcopal College Counseling is partnering with Paul Martin, founder of College Money Method, to bolster support in a critical area of your journey to college – understanding what it means to pay for college today and opportunities for financial aid. The first of six workshops will take place virtually on Sept 30 at 7pm:

A guide for seniors applying for need-based aid and merit scholarships.
Financial aid has become an integral part of the college application process. Merit scholarship requirements and deadlines don’t always match a college’s admission cycle, making the merit application process increasingly complex.
Having a roadmap for the different timelines and how to complete the various applications gives you the best opportunity for the greatest awards. October remains a critical month to complete the CSS Profile, prepare for the FAFSA, and apply for merit opportunities.
This workshop will help you stay informed and get answers to your questions, including…
- What are the deadlines for financial aid and merit applications?
- What can we do to prepare for the process?
- How do we complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile to ensure the most financial aid?
- How can we take the most advantage of merit scholarship opportunities?
Join this workshop for a comprehensive overview of the need-based and merit-based financial aid application process. You’ll receive expert guidance to complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile and advocate for your unique financial situation. You’ll also understand how to research, track and apply for merit aid.

Traffic Flow Map for Middle School Afternoon Pick-up
Ways we can partner to expedite the process:
- Make sure your student knows their pick-up plan each morning before school
- If plans change, have a process for your student to be notified (ie, email their school email, text them)
- Remind your student to retrieve their materials from their locker and proceed to the pick-up area quickly
- Follow the instructions by the ESJ Security Team
- Pull close to the curb and the car in front of you to allow for the left lane to be used for those exiting the line
We ask that you communicate directly with your student via their school email or text message. You may contact the Welcome Center prior to the dismissal bell if there is a pick-up change. As a reminder, the library is open and supervised until 6:00 p.m.
Head of School, Adam Greene, is the guest of honor and will talk for a few minutes on the state of the school and hang out to talk over drinks.
We hope to see you in the Busey Board Room and Roof Deck Patio at the new Haskell Center for Science and Student Life on Wednesday, September 10, at 5:30pm. Please RSVP via email to Kevin Davidsen at kevinpdavidsen@gmail.com so we can try to plan for drinks and food — but you are always welcome to show up even if you do not RSVP. Last year we had about 75 dads which was fantastic. Let’s break 100 this year.
College Counseling is hosting a series of application help opportunities in September and October. Whether your student is knee-deep in their application process or just getting started, their college counselors will be available to assist them and answer questions about applications, self-reported academic records (SSAR), college essays, resumes, and more.
- Drop-in application clinics in the College Counseling / Towers House for seniors to work on their applications with the help of their College Counseling team (and snacks)! Students can come for an hour or stay the whole time!
- Saturday, September 6 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and
- Wednesday, October 15 from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm (PSAT day)
- Students should RSVP (must be logged in to their ESJ account) for planning purposes; though drop-ins are welcome!
- ‘Office Hours in the Buck’ every Tuesday and Thursday during each class period from September 9 to October 30. A counselor will be available in the glass pod closest to the nurse’s entrance.
