Students have studied Roman history, the Latin language, and/or Italian art history at Episcopal. The trip aims to complement and deepen this knowledge through seeing many sites that provide a deeper insight into the lives of ancient Romans, the Renaissance, and modern Italians.
Trip highlights include:
- The Forum, Pantheon, and Colosseum in Rome — all marvels of ancient engineering.
- The Vatican and its museums with some great ancient, Renaissance, and modern art
- Herculaneum and Pompeii, which were destroyed in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD
- Visit the National Archaeological Museum in Naples
- Renaissance buildings of Naples, Venice, and Vicenza. Several buildings in Vicenza were designed by Palladio and will show the clear connection between ancient and Renaissance artwork.
The hope is to give students a greater understanding of ancient, Renaissance, and modern Italian culture through archaeological sites, museums, buildings still in use, and just general travel through the country.
