REQUIRED: 1 credit attained by two semester courses in Physical Education classes.

The requirement can also be met by taking Dance or participation in any ESJ interscholastic sport or dance ensemble during three school years (usually 9, 10 & 11).

The physical education requirement must be fulfilled at the end of the 11th grade. If it is not, students will be placed in an Upper School PE class as a senior.

PEUS21 Strength & Conditioning (.5 credit), Semester 1
PEUS22 Strength & Conditioning (.5 credit), Semester 2

Level: 9th through 12th grades

Length: Semester / Course can be taken more than once.

Description: This elective course is designed for student athletes to augment sport-specific skill development. Student athletes participate in weight training, circuit work, and sport-specific activities to enhance their overall mental and physical development. Students follow a training program designed to accomplish their predetermined individual goals.

PEUS41 Theory and Practice in Coaching (.5 credit), Semester 1

Level: 10th through 12th grades

Length: Semester

Description: This elective course is designed for students who are interested in coaching. Students begin to determine their coaching philosophy, while learning different coaching strategies and techniques. Students have the opportunity to design and implement practice plans utilizing the principles of training and motivation techniques. Students also develop communication skills to effectively interact with players, parents, press, and administration. CPR/First Aid training is available to participants of this course.

PEUS42 Sports Management (.5 credit), Semester 2

Level: 10th through 12th grades

Length: Semester

Description: This course is designed for students who are interested in the detailed operation of a sports program. Students will have the opportunity to design a program that includes the following: development and implementation of budget, uniform and equipment inventory, management of coaching and staff personnel, marketing strategies, and maintenance of facilities. Students will learn about the care and prevention of sports injuries in this course and can opt to receive CPR/ First Aid training.

PEUS5S Nutrition & Mindfulness (.5 credit)

Level: 10th through 12th grades

Length: Semester / Course can be taken more than once.

Description: Nutrition and mindfulness are important topics for students because of the significant impact they have on physical health, mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Subjects discussed will include food prep, meditation, disease prevention, and eating with intention. This course is project-based and will hone skills to empower students to make healthier choices.
