First Grade Students Explore the Magic of Light and Shadows

First graders on the Beaches Campus have been learning the basics of light. They discovered that light is a form of energy and that it travels in straight lines. The students also learned that transparent objects are see-through, like the color filter paper they put on the back of the box, translucent objects are kind of see-through like the parchment paper they put on the front of the box, and opaque objects block, all of the light like the objects they put inside of the box to make the shadows

To make the learning process engaging and interactive, their Science Teacher, Ms. Johnson had them use a simple flashlight and created shadow boxes which they shared with their friends and family this week in the science lab.

“The students took their projects seriously, illustrating creativity and teamwork” said Mrs. Phillips, First Grade Teacher. “One of the most exciting aspects of this project was understanding the formation of shadows. In the Cordell Library and Innovation Center, students learned that shadows are formed when an object blocks the path of light.”

“Through  these hands-on experiments and creative projects, our students have not only gained a deeper understanding of the world around them but have also fostered a love for science and art,” said Ms. Shilling, First Grade Teacher. “This exploration will serve as the foundation for their future scientific and creative endeavors. Ms. Johnson and her first-grade science classes have brought light, shadows, and the magic of learning to life!”
