Music Class Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 – October 15, Beaches Campus students have been immersed in Hispanic culture across multiple disciplines (art, music, dance, library and, of course, Spanish). Sarah Hartley, Beaches Campus music teacher, is highlighting Hispanic songs in her curriculum this month. Students are learning “El Florón,” a Spanish singing game from Puerto Rico. The song and game have students in a circle while a flower is passed behind their backs and concludes with students uncovering who has the flower. Students are also learning a Guatemalan folk song, “Vamos a la Mar.” Instruments like rhythm sticks and egg shakers are incorporated into the lesson to demonstrate rhythm and introduce the concept of rhythm reading. “The enrichment teachers have collaborated across multiple disciplines for Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a wonderful opportunity to promote cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusivity on our campus,” said Jennifer Ketchum, Head of Lowers School, Beaches Campus. |
