Faculty Present on Civil Discourse at FCIS

At the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) conference last week Amy Burrows Perkins ’92, Director of Student Services, and faculty member Emily Edmonson presented “What and Why: Starting a Civil Discourse Initiative.” The two spoke about their experiences in launching this initiative at ESJ over the past few years.

“Civil Discourse isn’t debate; it’s engaging in a conversation or dialogue in order to better understand another person. Having a faculty that can model difficult conversations and embrace different perspectives creates a learning culture where students are supported in courageous conversations,” read the presentation description. “Join us to learn about our experiences building a Civil Discourse Team and developing our Community Norms, and our journey to create meaningful connections across departments and among faculty, staff, and administrators.”

Faculty members Emily Edmonson, Caitlin Fitzpatrick, David Wandel, and Nitza Plaski delivered a separate presentation during the virtual portion of the FCIS conference titled “The Civil Discourse Toolbox.” They presented to nearly 60 attendees from other FCIS schools on useful methods and strategies for ensuring a positive Civil Discourse experience.
