Fine Arts Seniors Find Inspiration in New York City

Fifty fine arts seniors and faculty recently visited New York City for four days to be fully immersed in their respective arts.

The Visual Arts students visited several art exhibitions, including the Armory Show, Lower Eastside Galleries, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and the Metropolitan Museums. A highlight of the trip was meeting with Shantell Martin. The students created drawings on recycled bottles. These bottles were then included in a display in an art gallery in Rockefeller Center.

Performing arts students participated in a Broadway dance and singing workshop taught by a cast member of the musical “Back to The Future.” Students spent a morning touring the theatre district learning the histories of these famed theatres. At Radio City Music Hall, the group enjoyed the beauty and history of the 1930’s performance hall, including the opportunity to meet a Rockette. The jazz students were able to experience live jazz music by watching the Bill Charlap Trio at the Village Vanguard jazz venue. Students marveled at two Tony award winning Broadway musicals, “Back to the Future” and “The Outsiders.”

“It was an awesome trip,” said Fleming Walthour ’24.

“Ten out of ten experience,” agreed Audrey Vermillion ’24.

“I enjoyed being in New York with all my friends and I especially loved watching the Broadway shows,” Yasmin Salman ’24 said.

“Draw Paint Print students observed hundreds of examples of highly experimental artwork using unconventional surfaces, and observed unexpected ways to incorporate mixed media into visual artworks. We all have returned to ESJ with great inspiration and the students are ready to really push the limits of experimentation in their AP Portfolios.” said Rebecca Campbell, Upper School Draw, Paint, Print Instructor.
