March Madness Assignment Inspires Students to Explore Higher Education

St. Mark’s Campus fifth-grade students tapped into the excitement of March Madness by delving into research and crafting essays about colleges and universities participating in the competition. Each essay begins with an introduction featuring the name of the college or university, its location, mascot, and the rationale behind the student’s choice.

Students included statistics such as the number of undergraduate students, freshmen enrollment, acceptance rate, and tuition fees. The essays also highlighted the top three majors offered, the student-teacher ratio, available extracurricular activities, sports programs, and facts about the chosen colleges and universities.

“Engaging students with real-world events like March Madness not only spark interest but also cultivates research skills and broadens their understanding of higher education. said Katie Perkins, fifth grade teacher. “Through this exercise, we are paving the way for a deeper appreciation of collegiate institutions and their achievements.”
