Beaches Campus Embraces Time-Honored Christmas Tradition
Students on the Beaches Campus have been busy over the last few weeks crafting their nativity pieces in art class. This time-honored tradition not only showcases the students’ artistic talents but also fosters a sense of community and spiritual reflection during this season of Advent.
Under the guidance of Ms. Matthews, Beaches Campus Visual Art Teacher, students have embarked on the task of handcrafting their own piece of the nativity scene from earthenware clay. The project not only encourages artistic expression but also provides a meaningful way for students to connect with the Christmas story and its religious significance.
Art class has become a hub of imagination as students carefully mold and sculpt their nativity scene pieces. From the figures of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus to sheep and the Three Wise Men, each piece showcases the students’ creativity. While they are guided in the creation of the clay forms for each piece, they make artistic decisions by adding details and choosing their glaze colors. “The students learn a lot about the basic clay forms, construction techniques, and the particularities of ceramics through this special, annual project,” says Ms. Matthews.
“The tradition of molding a piece of the nativity scene holds a special place in the hearts of many of our families,” she adds. “The students look forward to making the pieces each year, and their families look forward to adding to their set and showcasing their child’s artwork as part of the holidays.”
As the holiday season approaches, the students’ handcrafted clay nativity piece will be coming home this week. These personalized pieces serve as a reminder of the traditions and the spirit of giving that define the Christmas season on the Beaches Campus.
