Fifth Grade Students Learn American Flag Handling Etiquette

As the oldest students on Lower School Campuses, fifth grade students are awarded several leadership opportunities through the year. They serve as safety patrols, Chapel leaders, and buddies to younger students. In addition, they have the honor of raising and lowering the American Flag on Baker Green each day. Last week, LCDR Ivan Williams, father to Anna ‘38, Audrey ‘35, and Abby ‘34, and LCDR Declan Sabar, spoke with students about the significance of American flag symbols and colors, and led a hands-on exercise focused on flag handling best practices.

“We learned how to properly fold a flag,” said Spencer S.

Commenting on what he learned, Luke M., fifth grade student, said, “It’s extremely serious because you have to be honorable to the flag.”

“Incorporating proper flag handling etiquette into the educational curriculum helps students develop a sense of national identity, respect for their country’s symbols, and an understanding of their role as responsible citizens,” said Beville Anderson, Head of Lower School, St. Mark’s Campus. “It also shows respect for veterans and those currently serving in the military.”
