Professional Development Promotes Multi-Sensory Approach to Literacy Education

Last week, St. Mark’s Campus Pre-K 4 and kindergarten teachers attended a weeklong Orton-Gillingham training led by The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). The 30-hour course was a hands-on, interactive, and personalized class that provided a complete understanding of morphology, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension and how to apply this in the classroom.

“We know that children learn in different ways,” said Beville Anderson, Head of Lower School, St. Mark’s Campus. “Orton Gillingham combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic tools to help students at all levels learn to read, love to read, and thrive.”

In related professional development, Pre-K 3 teachers participated in Learning Without Tears and Mat Man and Me training earlier this month. First and second grade teachers were engaged in training in “Implementing the Science of Reading in K-2”.
