Beaches Campus Redesigning, Reengineering, and Rethinking Education

Beaches Campus teachers and staff have been busy this summer with professional development in preparation for the start of the school year. Christy Maurer, kindergarten teacher, spent a week in Orton Gillingham training. The structured literacy approach breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time.

Jennifer Ketchum, Head of Lower School, Beaches Campus, and Leslie Sale, Christian Education teacher, attended the Diversity Institute with Rosetta Lee this week at Riverside Presbyterian Day School. Pre-school and elementary educators from independent schools in the Jacksonville area learned about stages of early awareness of difference and developmentally appropriate diversity work in the classroom.

Trish Shilling, Jody Tomaszewski, and Denise Cinnamond have attended math operations and  number sense workshops with Mathodology.  Mathodology helps teachers, students and parents make the connection between the ‘why’ and the ‘dow’ in the world of mathematics. This approach prepares students for a world that is increasingly number-centric.
