Girls' Varsity Soccer: District Champions

By: Olivia Kato ’19

It was January 26. The Episcopal and Bolles girls’ varsity soccer teams were fighting for one thing: the district championship Title. Bolles was originally ranked 1st in the district, with Episcopal ranking 3rd. Due to the semifinal games that Tuesday, the Eagles were able to move to 2nd place by defeating Bishop Snyder with a final score of 2-0. The district finals game was a tight one, with a score of 0-0 through three of four quarters and a yellow card distribution to an Episcopal player. There was an intensity and aggression that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Everything changed with four minutes left in the final quarter of the game. A ball, shot by sophomore Leena Vashi ‘20, assisted by senior Grace Courtney ‘18, went soaring over over the Bolles’ goalie’s head. It was a beautifully executed play, and, immediately after, the screams of Eagle fans rang through the air. Only one thought was going through the team’s mind now: We beat Bolles. ESJ’s team  was able to fight until the end and took home the District Championship trophy. The team will now move on to the Regional Quarterfinals to play Fernandina Beach on February 6.
