A.P Draw, Paint, Print Senior Spotlight: Danielle Corbin
Danielle Corbin ’18 has always loved artistic processes and began learning how to oil paint her junior year. Working extra hours at home and after school on her artwork has yielded beautiful results!
Q. What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central idea of my concentration is to portray vintage cars in Cuba as a symbol of my heritage. These cars represent the journey of my grandparents as they left Cuba and came to America. Through these paintings, I hope to bring these memories back to life to show that my heritage is an active force that impacts and shapes the way I view the world.
Q2. How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea?
Although much time has passed since my grandparents were in Cuba, my paintings depict these nostalgic memories in vibrant color. This color pallette will hopefully demonstrate the sheer beauty of these memories and the lasting impact they have had on my family. I used old black and white photographs of my grandparents as reference photos for the paintings to make this concentration deeply rooted in my family. I have never been to Cuba, but the visions of the cars, architecture, and nature are alive in my mind. I draw inspiration from the pictures and stories my grandparents have laid out before me. As I went through this process, I realized that these cars not only represent the journey of my grandparents from Cuba to America but also my journey as I grew from learning their story of the place they called home.
The AP Drawing Portfolio is an intensive course, requiring students to produce individual artworks at the college level. Students compile a portfolio of 24-29 original artworks demonstrating mastery in composition, technique, and concept. 12 of those pieces explore a common idea, called a concentration. This year, Ms. Hoadley’s class will be sharing their progress via the enews! Be sure to mark your calendars to come meet the artists, and see some of their final works on April 26!
