Rebecca Campbell Joins Visual Arts Department
Rebecca Campbell, the Upper School’s new Draw/Paint/Print instructor, joins the Visual Arts Department this year with diverse art experience and a commitment to helping students find ‘the zone.’
“This is when an artist is relaxed and feels safe, and can concentrate on their practice,” she says. “This ‘zone’… is when the magic happens.”
Ms. Campbell received a BFA with a minor in Education from University of Florida. “Upon entering higher education, I knew that my passion for creativity was something I wanted to spark in others,” she shares. Her prior art education experiences include leading teen art classes for Art League of Jacksonville, followed by painting and ceramics classes with the global non-profit organization, L’Arche, which works to create community networks among people with and without intellectual disabilities. She also taught private art lessons to individuals of all ages, including students with autism and other learning disabilities, and at a charter school, where she discovered a love for integrating history into art lessons.
While not on campus, she currently designs and guides mobile art education experiences for events through her LLC, Mobile Masterpieces Jax, and sculpts and fires ceramic sculptures and pottery in her garage studio. You can find Ms. Campbell displaying this ceramic work at art markets and festivals, including Riverside Arts Market.
While she shares her ceramics widely, Ms. Campbell says she enjoys all art media.
“I am always looking for ways to study the history of an art medium or genre and share that interest with my students,” she says. Pointing to M.C. Escher as one of her favorite artists, Ms. Campbell appreciates the importance of drawing to all art endeavors. She creates ink sketches alongside her ceramic work, and looks for opportunities to design large-scale murals. “One of the amazing things about being an artist is having the ability to make things your own way,” she says, emphasizing that “diversity is celebrated” in her classroom.
