Three Eagles Place at International Science Fair

Three Episcopal students were named Grand Award Winners in the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF), the world’s largest global high school competition. Historically held in person, 2021 marks the first time in its more than 70-year history that the competition took place virtually.  Although the COVID pandemic posed challenges to students around the world, Episcopal students found ways to design and conduct novel and robust science projects.
Julia Kagiliery ’21 was awarded Second Place and $1,000 in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Category for her creation of a novel method to determine heavy metal concentration in water samples.
Jordan Harrow ’21 was awarded Third Place and $500 in the Earth and Environmental Sciences for her two-year investigation of pesticide resistance in Daphnia.
Daniel Delong ’22 was awarded Third Place and $500 in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines category for engineering a robotic hand with computer vision and simulated grabbing of objects.
The Grand Awards Ceremony was held on the morning of May 21, after two weeks of rigorous judging.  In total, more than $5 million was awarded to the finalists, who were evaluated based on their project’s creativity, innovation and level of scientific inquiry.  More than four million students conduct science projects worldwide each year, and the best projects are presented at ISEF. This year’s competition featured more than 1,800 young scientists representing 49 states and 64 countries across the world.
