Fifth Graders Dive into Conservation at Crystal River

Fifth grade students from the Beaches and St. Marks Campuses recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Crystal River, where they had the unique opportunity to explore the habitat of one of Florida’s most beloved marine mammals—the manatee.

Guided by experts from River Ventures, students had an interactive learning experience, discovering firsthand the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship. The trip began with an educational briefing, where students learned about manatee biology, migration patterns, and the challenges these gentle giants face due to habitat loss and human impact.

Students took to the water for a guided swim, where they observed manatees in their natural environment. Seeing these creatures up close reinforced the lessons about responsible wildlife interaction and the need for ongoing conservation efforts.

Beyond the water, students explored the surrounding ecosystem, learning how seagrass beds, freshwater springs, and protected sanctuaries contribute to the survival of manatees and other aquatic species. Experiences like these highlight Episcopal’s commitment to experiential learning, encouraging students to connect classroom studies with real-world environmental challenges.
