Language Students Receive Honor Society Certificates

More than 100 World Languages students were recognized in a special ceremony on Tuesday, receiving certificates for induction into a language National Honor Society for Spanish, French, Chinese, American Sign Language, and Latin, as well as the Global Seal of Biliteracy awards. To achieve acceptance into the Honor Society, students must have reached Level 3 and have achieved other requirements specific to their respective language.

To achieve a Global Seal of Biliteracy, students must take four different language acquisition exams assessing reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension.  Upper School students may attain the following: Functional Fluency, which recognizes learners at the intermediate-mid proficiency level on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) scale, or Working Fluency, which acknowledges learning at the advanced-low proficiency level on the ACTFL scale.

“The ceremony celebrates our students’ achievements in studying a world language.  It is a special time in the academic year when we recognize the hard work and dedication of our students and our faculty. Each year we are excited to welcome so many ESJ students into these honor societies,” said Josephine Sanchez, World Languages Department Chair.
