Kids Can Code Brings Screen-Free Coding to Camp Create
Yesterday, Camp Create students on the St. Mark’s Campus engaged in a hands-on learning experience with Kids Can Code Jacksonville, exposing them to screen-free directional coding. Using Kinderbots and a robot puppy, the young coders programmed the puppy to move in various directions and complete tasks like pushing a ball and finding a bone. They also directed the robots to drive in simple shapes.
Lauren Wade, owner of Kids Can Code, highlighted the educational value of the activity, stating, “Computers can’t do anything unless somebody tells them to. This is a good way to get children to think outside their bodies and get a robot to do something without physically moving it.” She told students, “This involves a lot of experimentation. Sometimes codes don’t work, and you must keep trying!”
Kids Can Code will be offered as an after-school activity for Pre-Kindergarten through second-grade students this fall. This program complements the STEM robotics exposure that Pre-K 4 and older students receive in the Innovation Lab each week, providing a comprehensive introduction to coding and robotics.
